HONORING HISTORY
A Guardian of North Carolina’s Jewish Heritage
Over the years, community members have brought artifacts, heirlooms, family photographs and their memories to be preserved by the JHFNC. The exciting exhibits created from these gifts have been pivotal in our evolution and expansion into a statewide organization. They have included:
-
What We Brought With Us
- Stories and items from North Carolina’s Holocaust survivors, held at the NC Museum of History in Raleigh.
-
Migrations
- The history of eastern North Carolina’s Jewish settlements, which was displayed in six venues throughout the state.
-
A Call to Conscience: The Life and Times of Rabbi Efraim Rosenzweig
- A retrospective of Rabbi Rosenzweig’s original art and poetry presented inthe context of the turbulent social times of his tenure.
Part of our mission is to serve as custodian for objects that might otherwise end up lost or forgotten. To that end, we’ve helped save prayer books brought by immigrants from Moscow to Warsaw, N.C., we work with communities to preserve their synagogues and cemeteries as historical sites, and we redistribute ritual objects, sanctuary furniture and stained glass windows to growing congregations in need.
CELEBRATING CULTURE
The Rosenzweig Gallery
Focusing on Judaic art from North Carolina and the region, the Rosenzweig Gallery features a permanent collection of Jewish ritual objects and presents rotating exhibits on Jewish themes including Judaica, religious books and prints, and contemporary art. We showcase exceptional Jewish art featuring both rising young talent and accomplished artists working in paint, sculpture, photography, fiber and ceramics. Hundreds of visitors attend our exhibits including the very popular Annual Juried Art Show that attracts regional, national and even international submissions. Best-of-show winners are offered a one-person show in the following year. We seek to make our exhibits available for display in communities throughout the state.
We welcome you to visit the Rosenzweig Gallery’s modern, inviting facility soon.
We’re located at the Judea Reform Congregation, 1933 W. Cornwallis Road, Durham NC. Information about exhibits, hours and travel directions can be found (click on “Gallery”), or by calling 919 668-5839.
CONNECTING COMMUNITIES
Throughout North Carolina The Jewish Heritage Foundation of North Carolina, in coordination with the North Carolina Department of Public Instruction, is developing a fourth and eighth grade curriculum about the Jewish experience in North Carolina. With the current emphasis on diversity education it is hoped that the Jewish experience of immigration, and integration into society (mirroring much of the current immigrant experience) will be an example of how a group successfully attains the American dream.
